When you need a hit of inspiration, you probably head straight to Pinterest or TikTok.

The problem is, so does everybody else.

In a 2023 article, fashion commentator Alexandra Hilgreth told Vogue Business something that still haunts me to this day:

“You can tell a person’s screen time through their outfit.”

Nowadays, it’s hard to picture a time when inspiration came from offline sources.

The article mentions “identifiably online fashion,” or the pieces you have to be very online to recognize as trendy (think the yellow Onitsuka Tiger sneakers or the Gap fringe wrap cardigan). And it’s not just fashion. Weddings, birthday parties, and home decor are all starting to look alike.

But is it our fault for having the same great taste or the algorithm’s fault for feeding it to us?

Many of us are looking at the same videos, content creators, and ideas that get systematically filtered through our feed. So if we’re all consuming the same content, fresh inspiration must be found in the places we can't connect to by phone.

It’s time to go analog with magazines.

Is The Algorithm Working For You Or Vice Versa?

Engagement fuels today’s digital algorithms. What you search, share, like, comment on, and save all count toward your algorithm. It studies your personal data and feeds you versions of what you already like. New ideas struggle to cut through all the noise.

People are more online than ever, but there's hope still. We’re cancelling subscriptions (trying to, anyway), rejecting surveillance, and simply wanting to reconnect with physical media, even if the old TV shows don’t hit the same. Cultural commentators are even calling 2026 the age of analog.

Clearly, we’re attempting to unplug, and not just because doomscrolling is detrimental to our brains.

Even though ads and endorsements hide behind everything and everyday life feels like content, society craves authenticity and good taste.

That’s where the beauty of a magazine comes in.

Reading print media expands your horizons, undoes the effects of consuming too much short-form digital media, and refines your taste in an age where people ask ChatGPT what to think. And let’s not leave out the glossy, delightfully curated editorial spreads you just can’t capture on an iPhone.

The Case For Print

Back in the height of physical media, editorial chiefs and editors decided what was trendy because they had extremely specialized expertise. You’d have to wait for that deliciously sleek booklet to get delivered to your door—once a month at that—to know what was in or out. Its beautiful pages displayed a world of looks, ideas, photos, trends, people, and stories that you never would have found otherwise.

They still have that power.

If you pick up a magazine from the 2000s, I can almost guarantee its content will be just as insightful today. The fashion advice still applies, even if we're not ready for its resurgence. You’ll recognize a nepo baby’s mom and dad. You might even get some dating tips that that famous relationship therapist has never considered.

Even though we’re warming up to physical media again, magazines aren’t viewed en masse like they used to be. Yet, that’s a good thing. You could pick up a physical Cosmopolitan or Vogue or TIME in 2026 and still find at least a few ideas they haven't posted on their Instagram profiles. And it’s all curated to perfection!

If anything, magazines have gotten even better with time.

There’s a magazine subscription for every single interest. Recently picked up knitting? Get lost in Laine. Kinfolk has beautiful articles on slow living and independent journalism. Modern women will love Gentlewoman. And even if the heritage brands aren’t in circulation anymore (RIP the Seventeen Magazine of my childhood), the public library and the Internet Archive have archived hundreds of magazines for your viewing pleasure.

Here are a couple more niche magazine subscriptions for fresh creativity:

Getting the inspiration is one thing; actually doing something with it is another.

Don’t let ideas get dusty in your Saved folder or become forgotten in the next trend cycle.

Make the recipe! Rearrange your living room according to the how-to guide! Bring up an article in IRL conversation!

There's incredible power in refining your taste one page flip at a time.
