Modern romance has entered its most confusing stage yet: consistent digital communication with absolutely no indication of where this is going.

There was once a time when romantic interest required effort.

Flowers. Phone calls. Dates.

Now?

At 11:47 p.m., a man you haven't seen in nine days sends you a video of a raccoon stealing a DoorDash order.

> **“This is literally you 😂”**

Oh.

So we're in love?

## The Reelationship

You don't text much.

You haven't made plans.

You couldn't confidently tell your friends whether you're actually dating.

But you've exchanged 46 Instagram reels since Monday.

He knows your exact sense of humor. You know his algorithm has recently become concerned with golf, protein intake, and men building cabins in the wilderness.

This is intimacy now.

There is something strangely personal about someone seeing a video of a golden retriever falling into a swimming pool and immediately thinking:

*She needs to see this.*

Unfortunately, this does not answer the important questions.

What are we?

Are you seeing other people?

Would you like to have dinner sometime?

Do you know my last name?

## Digital Breadcrumbs Are Still Breadcrumbs

The problem isn't sending reels.

Sending reels is adorable.

The problem is when tiny digital interactions start masquerading as an actual relationship.

A meme is not a date.

Watching every Instagram Story I post is not courtship.

And liking the bikini picture I posted in 2022 at 1:14 in the morning is certainly *communication*, but I'd prefer not to analyze what kind.

At some point, somebody has to leave the app.

## Please Proceed to the Physical World

Send me the raccoon.

Send me the dog.

Send me the woman explaining why everyone's concealer is apparently wrong.

But then—and this is important—

*ask me to dinner.*

Because I cannot tell my mother we're getting serious when our most meaningful recent interaction was a TikTok about an air fryer.

**Although, admittedly, it was a very good TikTok.**
